❓ काय

On-demand — कोणतीही बांधिलकी नाही; Linux साठी सेकंदानुसार billing (किमान 60 सेकंद). प्रत्येक सूट याच आधारावर मोजली जाते.
Savings Plans — 1 किंवा 3 वर्षांसाठी दर तासाच्या खर्चाचे ($/hour) वचन (no, partial किंवा all upfront). Compute Savings Plans instance families, sizes, Regions ओलांडून लागू होतात — आणि Fargate व Lambda लाही; EC2 Instance Savings Plans जास्त सूट देतात पण तुम्हाला एका Region मधील एकाच family ला बांधून ठेवतात. एका वर्षासाठी साधारण एक-चतुर्थांश सूट, तीन वर्षांसाठी जवळपास निम्मी; नेमका दर type, Region आणि payment option वर अवलंबून असतो. 🤔 का

कारण काही मिनिटांत घेतलेल्या निर्णयांवर तोच fleet दुप्पट किंवा निम्म्या खर्चाचा होऊ शकतो: कोणता purchase option, कोणता processor, तो रात्री चालतो की नाही. आणि कारण बिल महिन्यानंतर येते — तोपर्यंत तो निर्णय नसून इतिहास झालेला असतो.

ec2/costs.py मध्ये आठ types च्या अंदाजे on-demand किमती, gp3 आणि snapshot किमती, आणि plans चे ढोबळ गुणक आहेत (1-yr Compute Savings Plan 0.72, 3-yr 0.50, spot (typical) 0.30). monthly(itype, plan, hours, count, gp3_gb) (compute $, storage $) परत करते, आणि storage चे बिल तास कितीही असले तरी लागते. ec2/demo.py मधील pricing() एका m7g.large ची एका महिन्याची किंमत चार प्रकारे काढते, मग फक्त office hours, मग Graviton विरुद्ध Intel.

📦 What's in this branch

All prices are approximate us-east-1 Linux figures: check the EC2 pricing page before you trust a number with money. The ratios are the lesson.

🧒 Explain like I'm 5

The study-hall company offers three deals for the same desk.

Pay as you sit 💵 (on-demand): walk in, sit, pay by the second, leave whenever you like. The most expensive per hour, the most freedom.
Promise a year 📝 (Savings Plans): "I promise to spend about this much per hour, every hour, for one or three years." In return, a big discount — but you pay the promise even on days you do not come.
Take a spare seat 🪑 (spot): desks nobody has booked right now, at a deep discount. The catch: if a paying customer needs it, you get a two-minute warning and must stand up.

A smart school uses all three: a promise for the desks that are always busy, pay-as-you-sit for the rush, and spare seats for homework that can be paused and picked up again.

❓ What

On-demand — no commitment; per-second billing for Linux (60-second minimum). The baseline every discount is measured against.
Savings Plans — commit to a $/hour of spend for 1 or 3 years (no, partial or all upfront). Compute Savings Plans apply across instance families, sizes, Regions — and to Fargate and Lambda; EC2 Instance Savings Plans give a bigger discount but lock you to one family in one Region. Roughly a quarter off for one year, around half for three; the exact rate depends on type, Region and payment option. (Reserved Instances are the older model of the same idea.)
Spot — spare capacity, often 60–90% below on-demand. AWS can reclaim it with a two-minute interruption notice (and sometimes an earlier rebalance recommendation). Spot prices move gradually with supply and demand. Best for fault-tolerant, stateless or checkpointed work — spread over several instance types and AZs.
The quiet costs — EBS volumes and snapshots bill while the desk is stopped (lesson 04); every public IPv4 address bills by the hour; data transfer out to the internet and across AZs costs extra; a NAT gateway bills by the hour and by the GB.
Levers that stack — right-size (lesson 02), Graviton, turn off what is idle (office hours), then commit to what remains with a Savings Plan.
Guard rails — AWS Budgets alerts, Cost Explorer, and cost allocation tags (the team: maths tag from lesson 03) so every dollar has an owner.

🤔 Why

Because the same fleet can cost twice as much, or half as much, depending on decisions that take minutes: which purchase option, which processor, whether it runs at night. And because the bill arrives a month later — by then it is history, not a decision.

🔧 How (in this repo)

ec2/costs.py holds approximate on-demand prices for eight types, gp3 and snapshot prices, and rough plan multipliers (1-yr Compute Savings Plan 0.72, 3-yr 0.50, spot (typical) 0.30). monthly(itype, plan, hours, count, gp3_gb) returns (compute $, storage $), with storage billed whatever the hours. pricing() in ec2/demo.py prices one m7g.large for a month four ways, then office hours only, then Graviton vs Intel.

🏁 What you just proved

The same desk has a range of prices, you can compute them, and the biggest savings come from stacking levers — the right processor, the right hours, then the right promise.

⚠️ Common mistakes

buying a 3-year Savings Plan before right-sizing — you lock in the waste
spot for a single database or anything that cannot handle a two-minute notice
one spot instance type in one AZ — diversify, or capacity disappears all at once
forgetting stopped-desk disks, idle Elastic IPs and public IPv4 addresses on the bill
no tags, so nobody can say which team's desks cost what

🏭 Why this matters in production: mature teams run a monthly cost review: Compute Optimizer for right-sizing, Savings Plans coverage around the steady baseline, spot for CI runners and batch workers, budgets that alert before the invoice, and tags that make every cost somebody's.
